What myHealth@myHands Means for Citizens and the Healthcare System in Romania

Easier access to medical data, less bureaucracy, and healthcare services that work beyond borders – through the myHealth@myHands project, Romania, through the National Health Insurance House (CNAS), is taking an important step toward a European-connected digital healthcare system that supports both Romanian citizens abroad and citizens of other Member States who are temporarily in Romania.

The myHealth@myHands project is transforming the way citizens interact with the healthcare system by providing digital solutions that enable secure access to essential medical information, regardless of the country in which a person is located. The main objective is to ensure that the data needed to deliver healthcare services are available where and when they are required, in a safe, controlled, and user-friendly manner.

In practice, this means that when a Romanian citizen travels to another European Union Member State and requires medical care, the necessary information can be accessed quickly by healthcare professionals, without the need for physical documents or complex administrative procedures. At the same time, the same mechanisms apply to citizens of other Member States who are visiting Romania, facilitating their access to healthcare services and supporting Romanian healthcare providers in delivering appropriate care.

The involvement of the National Health Insurance House (CNAS) is essential for integrating these solutions into Romania’s public healthcare system. CNAS supports the connection between national systems and European digital infrastructures, ensuring interoperability and compliance with data protection rules. Citizens remain in control of their personal information, and data are accessed only under clear and well-defined conditions.

For patients, the benefits are tangible: faster access to healthcare services, less bureaucracy, and a smoother experience when abroad or when receiving care in another Member State. For doctors and healthcare providers, this means clearer and more timely information that supports medical decision-making. For the healthcare system as a whole, it results in more efficient processes and better coordination at European level.

The myHealth@myHands Project

myHealth@myHands is a European project aimed at developing digital health solutions designed to facilitate secure access to medical data and to support interoperability between healthcare systems across European Union Member States. The project promotes a citizen-centric approach, in which people’s mobility is supported by secure digital services that comply with European regulations and are tailored to users’ real needs.

The Consortium

The myHealth@myHands consortium brings together a balanced mix of public institutions—such as ministries, health insurance bodies, and digital health authorities—alongside private companies in the IT and consultancy sectors, as well as research and non-profit organizations from several European countries. This diversity enables the project to be approached from complementary perspectives and supports the development of digital health solutions that can be adapted to different national healthcare systems.
